California to crack down on workers holding multiple state jobs

Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration says it is cracking down on employees who hold more than one state job -- a practice the state controller found to be widespread throughout California government.

The action comes in the wake of a Sacramento Bee report that found that more than 570 state workers held more than one public position.

The California Department of Human Resources said in a a statement that it was ‘conducting a full review to determine whether there is any justification for continuing this practice in rare cases where it might save money or be necessary by law.’

The Bee first reported that the state’s public pension system was giving salaried employees added compensation for extra computer or customer service work. A CalPERS spokesman told the paper that a meeting with the state’s human resources department was planned to discuss the practice.

CalPERS said the program actually saved the department an estimated $1.6 million that it would have had to spend to bring in outside contractors.
