Firefighters extinguished a blaze Friday at the California Conservation Corps camp that destroyed one building and caused about $30,000 damage. Firefighters from the San Marcos and Deer Springs fire departments responded at 10:03 a.m. to the fire, about five miles north of Escondido, which started when someone entered a room being painted and ignited some paint thinner with a cigarette, said Deer Springs Fire Capt. Nick Raymond. The fire was extinguished about 25 minutes later. Danny Castillo, a 20-year-old resident of the camp, was taken to Palomar Hospital in Escondido, where he was treated for shoulder injuries he suffered while fighting the fire, hospital officials said. Damage to the structure was $27,000 and damage to the contents was $3,000, Raymond said.
