Prep Baseball : Sunny Hills’ Wilson Gets No-Hitter : Lancers Collect 23 Hits to Roll Past San Clemente, 20-0

Sunny Hills High School’s Mike Wilson pitched a no-hitter and helped the Lancers to a 20-0 win over San Clemente in Loara Tournament action Friday.

Wilson, a senior left-hander, had 13 strikeouts and walked just two batters--one in the second and one in the sixth--in picking up his first win of the season for the Lancers.

Right fielder Paul Abbott (a solo home run), Pat Segeo (triple, single and five RBIs) and Mike Lutz (four hits) led the Lancers’ hitting attack. Sunny Hills (1-1) had 23 hits and scored in all but one of the innnings in the second-round game.

The Lancers will play a nonleague doubleheader today against Saddleback.

San Clemente fell to 0-2.

In other Loara Tournament action:

Ocean View 5, Santa Ana Valley 2--Shortstop David Tinkle and third baseman Tommy Smythe each hit RBI triples as the Seahawks (1-1) knocked the Falcons (0-2) out of the tournament with the victory in the consolation bracket at Ocean View.

Tinkle also had a single and two other RBIs. Kelly Stovall (1-0) pitched the first four innings to get the win.

Cypress 4, Villa Park 0--Senior left-hander Brian Coriell (1-0) threw a two-hitter, struck out seven and walked none to lead the Centurions past the Spartans in Cypress.

Cypress (1-1) scored all of its runs in the sixth inning. Kevin Black led off with a single and Wade Brandenberger reached on an error to set up Eric Krivashei’s RBI single. Scott Milne followed with a single to drive in Brandenberger. Kevin Harper then walked to load bases. After a popup, Troy O’Leary singled to drive in Krivashei. Darren Tekely grounded to second to drive in the fourth run.

Cypress will face Ocean View in the next round.

Esperanza 13, El Toro 2--The Aztecs improved their record to 2-0 by routing the Chargers (1-1) at El Toro. Mike Sims led a 12-hit Esperanza attack by going 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Greg Beckman and David Morales each had two hits. David Salcido allowed one run in his five innings of work to get the win for the Aztecs.

North Riverside 8, Troy 3--Three Troy pitchers gave up eight walks to help the Huskies win at Troy. North (2-0) trailed, 3-2, going into the fifth inning when the Huskies scored five times to take a 7-3 lead. Mike Franks had a two-run double for North in the fifth, while J.J. Culpepper had an RBI triple and Brian Carricaburu an RBI double. Culpepper pitched six scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Greg Nelson took the loss for Troy.

Sonora 10, Katella 7--Dennis Brakebill’s two-run triple keyed a four-run first inning for the Raiders. Sonora (1-1) scored four more runs in the fourth to lead, 8-1, at that point. Brian Needham pitched 5 innings to pick up the win. He was relieved by Scott Rajcic, who went the final 1 innings. Sonora outhit Katella (0-2), 11-9.

La Quinta 6, El Dorado 0--The Aztecs (2-0) had eight hits, and the Golden Hawks (1-1) committed seven errors in this second-round game.

Western 4, Edison 3--The Pioneers scored four runs in the first inning and pitcher David Tellers recorded seven strikeouts as they upset the top-ranked Chargers in Anaheim. Mike Frabotta and John Ortiz hit consecutive doubles to drive in runs in the Pioneer first and Rob Harrison singled in another run. After Roger Klump’s sacrifice fly, Paul Boucher, who walked, was caught in a rundown, which allowed another run to score.

Kennedy 2, St. Paul 0--Jim Jones allowed only one hit, a bloop single to right field with two outs in the seventh inning, as he shut out the Swordsmen (1-1). Brent Rallo and Dave Robinson drove in runs as the Irish improved their record to 2-0.

Fountain Valley 10, Los Alamitos 2--Don Snowden and Bob Sharpnack led the Barons to an easy second-round win in Glover Stadium. Snowden hit a home run and a triple and had four RBIs and Sharpnack also homered. Sam August pitched five innings to get the win for Fountain Valley, which improved its record to 2-0. The Griffins are 1-1.

In nonconference action:

University 7, Laguna Hills 2--The Trojans (2-0) took advantage of two Hawk errors in the second inning to score four unearned runs to win at University. Mark Stride pitched the first five innings to get the victory for University, and Tom Staff pitched the final two innings to get a save. Mark Favorite had two RBIs for the Trojans.
