Simi Valley High got on track in the second period to score two goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Tustin in a girls 3-A Southern Section soccer playoff game at home.
The game was scoreless for 16 mintues of the first half until Tammy Schroeder of Simi sent a penalty shot past Kim Collins. To start the second half, Simi got a goal from Leslie Page. The game reverted to a defensive struggle until only 35 seconds remained and Patty Gainey took a header in front of the net.
“We practice that play in practice and I didn’t know if we were ever going to get a chance to use it,” Gainey said. “I got pretty lucky though because I thought it was going to hit the pole.”
Simi Valley, which improved its record to 23-0-2, will play either Esperanza or Royal Tuesday at Simi Valley. Tustin ended its season at 12-5-4.
“We kept putting pressure on them and hoped they would make a mistake,” Simi Valley Coach Mark Johnson said. “They put pressure on us too, but we were able to capitalize on theirs.”
