NEW-MUSIC VISION

“VISION QUEST” sound track. Various artists. Geffen. Too many rock sound tracks are so larded with recycled tracks and star rejects that this more honest effort stands nicely on its own as a new-music sampler.
The hottest attraction is, of course, Madonna, whose two new numbers--”Gambler” and “Crazy For You”--show off her rock and ballad sides to suitably sultry effect. Also new are Journey’s “Only the Young,” a lush teen anthem that proves the band hasn’t grown fat on its formula; Don Henley’s “She’s on the Zoom,” a fast-lane rock-a-boogie that really lays rubber; Dio’s “Hungry for Heaven,” a mature jolt of heavy-metal, and the Style Council’s “Shout to the Top,” a monotonously minor dance track.
The recycled stuff paces the album well enough--John Waite’s “Change” and Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded” remain listenable after all their spins, while tracks by Red Rider and Sammy Hagar rate as fair rediscoveries. Album executive producers John David Kalodner, Jon Peters and Peter Guber obviously have seen through the rock sound-track syndrome and sought to offer some value for the money.
