Americans paid an extra $1.3 billion to heat their homes in January, battling below-normal temperatures during one of the coldest months on record, government weather experts report. Temperatures 2 to 12 degrees below normal over almost all of the country produced the eighth-greatest temperature-related heating demand nationally since 1932, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. The abnormal $1.3-billion heating bill represented an extra $18 for each homeowner.
