MISSION, Kan. — The Big Ten, Atlantic Coast and Western Athletic Conferences plus Division 1-A Southern independents helped college football set a record for attendance in 1984. The NCAA reported that the total for the 654 colleges which compete in the sport was 36,652,179 in the ’84 season.
It was an increase of 350,302 over the previous mark and was the 29th increase in the last 31 years. Of the 654 schools which revealed gate counts, 501 are NCAA members.
