Battleship Iowa Will Be Based at Staten Island

WASHINGTON — Navy Secretary John F. Lehman Jr. made it official Thursday that Staten Island, N.Y., will be the home port for the battleship Iowa and its escort vessels.
The decision has been pending since 1983, when the Navy tentatively selected Staten Island. The final decision came after an environmental statement concluded that the base would have no negative impact on the area.
