A rolling earthquake centered in Ventura County prompted hundreds of telephone calls to law enforcement agencies, but there were no reports of damage. Caltech spokesman Dennis Meredith said the temblor, at 4.5 on the Richter scale, was centered two miles northeast of Santa Paula. Fillmore Police Officer John Popps said, “It was no big thing. Just a little roller that lasted about 20 seconds.” Nevertheless, the Los Angeles Fire Department went into its earthquake mode, moving equipment out of buildings and sending a helicopter aloft.
