Todd Zeal’s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Tory Lovullo with the winning run and gave UCLA a 7-6 victory over 18th-ranked San Diego State in a nonconference collegiate baseball game at Westwood Tuesday.
Neal Newns, the third Bruin pitcher, picked up the win to even his record at 2-2. Kevin Piper, SDSU’s fourth pitcher, took the loss.
San Diego State (30-14-1) had scored three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game before UCLA (22-18-1) won it.
After the Bruins’ Lovullo opened the ninth with a walk, Hector Cano sacrificed and John Joslyn--who earlier had hit a two-run homer--walked setting the stage for Zeal’s game-winner, a single to center field.
The Aztecs meet Cal State Los Angeles at 2:30 today before returning home to face the San Diego Padres at 7 o’clock Friday night at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. SDSU then plays host to Hawaii in its Western Athletic Conference Southern Division opener at 5 p.m. Saturday.
