A 27-year-old Mexican national was convicted in Los Angeles Superior Court of 35 counts of grand theft and bad check writing stemming from a real estate investment scam in which 28 victims lost about $1 million. Rosalba Chavez of Guadalajara told investors that she would double their money by helping them purchase distressed property in Los Angeles and fixing it up for resale, Deputy Dist. Atty. Judy Gray said. No proof has been found that the property ever existed, Gray said. Chavez, whose lawyer contended that another woman was responsible for the lost funds, was acquitted on 20 other counts of selling securities without a permit. Sentencing was set for April 30.
