Not the Highest

We’ve been fortunate enough to see a very great part of the world, but I’m always annoyed by inaccuracies in supposed-to-be-factual articles. Like the piece about “The Magnificent Matterhorn” by Beverly Beyer and Ed Rabey (March 10). Contrary to their claim that the Matterhorn is the highest peak in Switzerland, the tiniest amount of research will show that the mountain, on the border with Italy, is 4,478 meters high. The Lyskamm, alongside, is 4,538 meters, and the Dufourspitze (one peak of the Monte Rosa), also sharing the border, is 4,639 meters. The highest peak entirely in Switzerland is the Dom, 4,554 meters, which towers above Saas-Fee. The Matterhorn, with its dramatic presence and climbing history, doesn’t need any further distinction.
