The second earthquake in 12 hours struck off the coast of Malibu this morning, but neither of them caused any damage, and authorities reported few phone calls from residents. Both quakes were centered nine miles west of Malibu, said Dennis Meredith, spokesman for Caltech in Pasadena.
The first, at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, registered 3.6 on the Richter scale. The second, at 5:20 a.m. this morning, registered 3.2. The Sheriff’s Department Malibu substation received only two calls, both after the first jolt. “Two people called and just wanted to know if we heard anything, and we said, ‘No, we didn’t feel anything,’ ” Sgt. Tom Pitkin said.
