Israeli Immigrants: Moscow Movies Top Hebrew ‘Hill Street’

TEL AVIV — Tired of American crime shows with Hebrew subtitles, dozens of Soviet Jews who moved to Israel are tuning into television programs from their old homeland.
About 20 Soviet Jewish families in the southern desert town of Beersheba have purchased small rooftop satellite dishes that pick up Soviet TV, the Maariv newspaper reported Monday.
“What does Israel television give you except news and American movies showing only murder and suspense?” said Boris Resnik, an engineer who immigrated six years ago from Moscow.
“I want to come home at night, sit in my easy chair and enjoy--not sweat from fear. I can’t read the Hebrew subtitles on Israel TV. Soviet TV broadcasts a large variety of Russian movies, and I am much more relaxed.”
