The cost to hospitals of providing health care rose in 1984 by only 4.6% over the previous year, the smallest annual increase since 1963, the American Hospital Assn. reported. It cost the hospitals $125.7 billion to provide health care in 1984, compared with $120.2 billion in 1983, the AHA said. The flattened rate of increase was attributed to fewer admissions, an increase in outpatient visits and recent limits on government health insurance payments.
