Households with annual incomes under $9,000 may apply for exemption from the city utility tax at the Finance Department in Alhambra City Hall. Applicants must complete forms by April 30 in order to be eligible July 1, when the exemption ordered by the City Council takes effect. City officials have estimated that 5,000 of the city’s 26,000 families have incomes low enough to qualify for the exemption. The 5% utility tax applies to bills for electrical, gas, water, telephone and cable television service.
