LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS, Switzerland — The Cartier jewelry company Thursday ran a bulldozer over 5,000 fake watches as part of a campaign to keep imitations from stealing its customers.
The watches were seized mainly in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. But Cartier claims that more than half the fakes were assembled in Italy.
Many of the fakes would have cost only about $4 to make. Authentic Cartier watches sell for hundreds of dollars.
