Road crews began filling in a highway pothole big enough to swallow a tractor-trailer rig. The hole in a stretch of Interstate 40 over an abandoned sewer line suddenly appeared near Barstow after years of soil erosion, the California Highway Patrol said. Traffic was detoured two miles along the old parallel road once known as U.S. 66. The CHP said it was not known how long the eastbound lanes will be closed due to the repair work east of Montare Road.
