UC Irvine’s Associated Graduate Students’ Council has voted 9 to 1 to declare the group a sanctuary for refugees of war-torn Central America. Alan Affeldt, president of the council that represents all UCI graduate students, said the organization also decided to join a college “sanctuary network” that is seeking to protect Central American refugees. He said UC student organizations at the Berkeley, Riverside, Fresno and Los Angeles campuses have already set themselves up as sanctuaries. Affeldt said that by joining the sanctuary network, UCI graduate students housing refugees would receive support from the group if legal action was ever taken against them.
