Brandon Richards, considered the best high school pole vaulter in the nation, has signed a national letter of intent to attend UCLA, the school announced Tuesday.
Richards, a senior at San Marcos High in Santa Barbara, was recently named the Track and Field News prep indoor athlete of the year. He holds the national indoor high school pole vault record of 17-6, which he set last month.
Richards, the son of two-time Olympic gold medal-winning pole vaulter Bob Richards, hopes to break the prep outdoor record of 18-1 this spring. The record was set by Joe Dial in 1981.
