Du Pont Profits Cut by Extraordinary Charges

Du Pont Co. reported first-quarter net income of $64 million after absorbing large unusual charges totaling $157 million after taxes.
Excluding these unusual charges, income was $221 million. The company earned $373 million in the first quarter of 1984.
The unusual charges, previously announced, were $125 million for the company’s early retirement program and $32 million as a result of Du Pont Canada’s decision to dispose of its 20% interest in Petrosar.
