Tax Discussion Postponed:Because two members of the five-person City Council were absent, discussion of placing a tax measure before the voters was postponed until May 7. The council is considering a number of tax measures to cope with a city budget deficit that could come close to $1 million. Three council members have expressed their preference for a proposal for a property tax override. Under provisions in Proposition 13, such a measure would require approval from two-thirds of the voters. Since Proposition 13 passed in 1978, Stanton voters have twice approved tax overrides. The current override expires June 30. Two council members favor a council-approved utility-users tax instead of an override.
