ROMULUS, Mich. — About 450 Las Vegas-bound passengers were evacuated from a National Airlines jumbo jet today after the apparent failure of a light fixture released smoke into the cabin, authorities said.
At least 25 passengers received bumps and scrapes leaving the chartered Boeing 747, said an airline spokesman, who said the evacuation apparently was unnecessary. He said the plane was on the ground at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, ready to take off, when part of a fluorescent light fixture exploded. He said there was no fire or damage to the plane.
