Santa Ana : Officials Mark Start of Colony Housing Project

Construction of the city’s largest development of single-family houses in 10 years gets under way this afternoon at the corner of Newhope and 1st streets, when city officials gather to celebrate the beginning of the California Colony project.
The 93 houses, some priced below $100,000, are part of the North Harbor Redevelopment Area. The project is credited as the impetus for upgrading the west Santa Ana neighborhood.
California Colony is the “showpiece project” of the redevelopment area, said Mayor Daniel E. Griset. Since it was approved last year, two additional tracts of more than 200 houses each have been proposed for the area.
The first houses are expected to be completed by June. The builder is Los Angeles-based Kaufman and Broad.
