Heart-Implant Patient Takes Walk in Sweden

STOCKHOLM — The first recipient of a permanent artificial heart outside the United States took a walk indoors Thursday with a portable air compressor that powers the mechanical pump, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Tanja Blanck of Karolinska Hospital said the patient’s liver and kidney functions were “improving steadily” since the operation April 7 and that he was in good spirits.
The hospital identifies the patient only as a middle-aged Swede, but Scandinavian news media say he is businessman Leif Stenberg, 53, who is under indictment for tax fraud.
