Pact Awarded for Long Beach Public Housing

Shapell Housing Inc., Beverly Hills, has been awarded a $6.5-million construction contract for 155 new public housing units for the elderly in the Carmelitos Public Housing development in Long Beach. The contract was awarded by the county Community Development Commission.
Pending approval from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, construction is expected to begin this week, with completion by next spring. The new construction will replace 130 dilapidated units demolished in 1983.
Included in the contract will be the construction of a senior center and a community center on the 15-acre, 43-year-old project. The new construction is the final part of a $24-million revitalization program at the project. The architect is Kamnitzer & Cotton, Architects, Los Angeles, and Alpha Construction Co., Los Angeles, is doing the modernization work.
