A 35-year-old woman was killed and her son was injured when their car crashed into the center divider of the San Diego Freeway in Seal Beach, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.
Amalia Artiga of Bell Gardens died of massive head injuries at the scene, and her son, Francisco Artiga, 17, suffered a mild concussion and cuts, officials said.
The crash occurred about 8:20 p.m. Saturday on the southbound side of the freeway, south of Seal Beach Boulevard, CHP dispatcher Richard Crow said.
Amalia Artiga was driving “at a high rate of speed” and lost control of the car as she changed lanes, Crow said. The car veered into the center divider fence, and parts of the fence sliced through the vehicle, causing the fatal injuries, the dispatcher said.
Francisco Artiga was reported in stable condition at Fountain Valley Community Hospital.
