TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Hilary Hemingway, niece of the Nobel Prize-winning author of “The Old Man and the Sea,” has won a trip to Los Angeles for writing a screenplay about her father.
Hemingway, 23, of San Marino Island on Miami Beach, is one of six writers named as winners in the state’s first competition for Florida-based screenplays, Gov. Bob Graham announced Wednesday.
Her script, “A Light Within the Shadow,” details the struggle of her father, Leicester, to maintain his own identity as a writer in the shadow of his more famous older brother, Ernest. Leicester Hemingway committed suicide in 1982 in Miami Beach, 21 years after Ernest Hemingway killed himself with a shotgun in his Idaho mountain home.
