Goodyear Tire & Rubber and the United Rubber Workers reached a proposed three-year agreement that includes wage increases of 25 cents an hour the first year, 10 cents the second year and 8 cents the third year, as well as a quarterly cost-of-living adjustment. URW members now average $12.39 an hour. About 16,000 union-represented employees at 12 Goodyear plants involved in master-contract bargaining continued to work after the old contract expired April 20. The URW has been representing about 36,000 workers at the Big Four rubber companies in contract talks. Tentative agreements have not been reached for union-covered workers at Firestone Tire & Rubber and Uniroyal.
