N.Y. Firemen in Hot Water Over Cold Beer

NEW YORK — After recent bad publicity for the Police Department, the Fire Department has come up with its own little scandal: The soda machine in a Bronx firehouse was found to be stocked with 67 bottles of beer, and eight officers have been transferred.
The officers’ union says the disciplining--the two captains and six lieutenants face departmental charges--may be an “overreaction” resulting from recent police scandals, which have included accusations that drug suspects were tortured.
Fire Department spokesman John Mulligan said: “We wanted to show this will not be tolerated.” Fire Commissioner Joseph Spinnato said that the beer was found March 17--St. Patrick’s Day.
