SEOUL, South Korea — About 1,000 students clashed with riot police Saturday after police detained student leaders to keep them from organizing massive anti-government protests, witnesses said.
Police said they were holding 18 leaders after students said they would step up demonstrations against President Chun Doo Hwan’s government this month to mark the fifth anniversary of a weeklong civil uprising in the southwestern city of Kwangju, in which at least 189 people were killed.
