Vandalism

The street thugs who vandalized the Jefferson Branch Library (Times, June 7), “Library Reopens to an Uncertain Future,” know instinctively that such acts are an attack on civilization. They know violence can rule only if education, access to information and the other services libraries offer are eliminated.
To complete their control of the area, of course, the thugs will have to move on to destroying schools, hospitals, churches and temples. For laughs, they might as well desecrate a few cemeteries.
Enough is enough. An attack on a library is an attack on freedom. It must be recognized as such and appropriate action taken now.
