ITALY SIGNS ART PROTECTION TREATY

ROME — Italy has signed a European treaty intended to protect works of art from theft and smuggling, and to speed up their return when found, the Italian news agency said.
The news agency AGI said the treaty, which has been signed by Greece, Liechtenstein and Portugal, calls for cooperation in the return of stolen artworks.
The Council of Europe, an organization promoting international cooperation on all matters except defense, initiated the treaty.
Before it takes effect, the treaty must be ratified by the parliaments of at least three participating nations.
