Freeway Expert Named to Caltrans’ No. 2 Post

Heinz Heckeroth, one of the principal architects of Southern California’s freeway system, has been selected to fill the newly-created post of chief deputy director of Transportation, it was learned Tuesday.
Heckeroth, Caltrans’ Los Angeles district director since 1979 and a veteran of 30 years with the state’s freeway planning and building agency, will take over as head of programs and budgets for the statewide highway system. Administration sources confirmed his selection to the $63,000-a-year job, the No. 2 post under Caltrans director Leo Trombatore. He will work in Sacramento.
