$6 Million in Marijuana Destroyed

SACRAMENTO — Government agents said Tuesday that they destroyed more than $6 million in marijuana plants, arrested six people and seized an arms cache in sweeps in eight counties at the outset of California’s contribution to a nationwide campaign against pot growers.
Raids were made in Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Tuolumne, Butte, Tehama, San Diego and Ventura counties, state officials said.
This week’s search-and-destroy missions were launched after Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III called for nationwide raids to eradicate the “gateway narcotic” that he said leads users to harder drugs. Authorities in California plan to continue stepped-up raiding for several days using up to seven teams of a dozen officers each.
