From Times Wire Services

It was one of the few matches that John McEnroe didn’t want to play. But, nobody could blame him for being a little apprehensive after defeating his brother Patrick in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, Tuesday in the Volvo tennis tournament at Stratton, Vt.

Patrick who at 19 is and seven years younger than John, was ranked No. 437 going into their first-ever tournament meeting. John, ranked No. 1, used accurate baseline shots to win.

John, who has recently been playing a tour of one-night exhibitions, was uneasy about playing his brother.

“I’m always a little nervous before a match, and I was more so today,” the three-time Wimbledon champion said. “I’m glad to get this over. Now I can think about the tournament. “I hope now that I don’t have to play him for several years.”

Patrick, who attends Stanford, said that his older brother “was just working on his game” during the 1-hour 5-minute match.

“I can win a few points from him in practice, but today he was putting a lot of pressure on me,” Patrick said. “The shots were coming back so fast.”
