A pedestrian was killed in Oceanside Tuesday evening when he attempted to cross California 78 and was hit by two vehicles, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said. Stephen J. Meaney, 22, a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, attempted to cross the westbound lanes of Highway 78, just west of El Camino Real, from the center divider. He ran into the first lane, where he was hit by a car and carried into the next lane, where he was hit by a second vehicle, the spokeswoman said. He was thrown 114 feet by the second vehicle and was dead when CHP officers found him.
