Law Provides Funds for Kosher Monitors

Gov. George Deukmejian has signed a measure granting the Department of Food and Agriculture $46,000 a year to hire two inspectors to monitor the invoices of kosher food establishments.
The measure, introduced by Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) and Sen. Herschel Rosenthal (D-Los Angeles), requires operators of stores that sell fresh meat and poultry as kosher to keep their paper work on hand for a year.
It was requested by representatives of the Orthodox community after the state attorney general’s office found examples of butcher shops selling meat as kosher that in fact had not been slaughtered according to Jewish dietary regulations.
