Rep. William E. Dannemeyer (R-Fullerton) said he has asked Secretary of Health and Human Services Margaret M. Heckler to bar homosexuals from donating blood for transfusions. Dannemeyer said the prohibition, which also would apply to organ donations, is necessary because homosexuals are a high-risk group for catching and spreading acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The disease, which leaves its victims vulnerable to other illnesses by weakening the body’s immune system, can be spread through blood transfusions. Dannemeyer spokesman David Ellis said the congressman is prepared to introduce legislation in Congress calling for the ban if Heckler refuses to act.
