One of two men found trying to pry open a stolen safe in a field in Alpine early Thursday morning was shot by a deputy sheriff during a scuffle and is under guard in Sharp Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit, authorities said. David Thomas Kenney, 28, has been charged with assault on a deputy sheriff, according to a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
Deputy D.W. Krouskop was attacked by Kenney, the spokesman said, when Krouskop approached the men. Kenney was shot in the abdomen and right leg. Krouskop then called paramedics, who moved Kenney to Sharp.
Deputies confiscated the safe, which they said was stolen, though they would not say who owned it.
The second man, who left the scene during the fracas, had not been found Thursday night.
