Living Conditions

Just as I was in the last days of preparing myself for my return to the classroom I read in The Times (Aug. 22) that in the town where I live the floor of the jail that houses inmates is going to be air conditioned. This is because the inmates may claim “inhumane treatment” if it isn’t.
The town I teach in is only 10 miles from here. Every year students and teachers have complained about the “almost unbearable” conditions of heat and humidity, especially during September and October, and sometimes May and June. For years no one has been concerned about those conditions, and I don’t expect that to change.
I don’t know what will have to happen to insure that my working conditions will be at least equal to the living conditions of a prison inmate.
