2nd Marriages Need Blessing, Cleric Says

LONDON — The Archbishop of Canterbury said Thursday that the Church of England should bless the marriages of divorced people.
The archbishop, the Most Rev. Robert Runcie, is spiritual leader of the state Church of England, which refuses to sanction the remarriage of divorced persons in accordance with the doctrine that marriage should last a lifetime.
A few clergy ignore the ruling, saying that refusal is un-Christian.
Runcie said in the weekly Woman’s Realm that the church should actively support people who have failed at their first marriage but want to try again, rather than punish them for the first failure.
