Mission Viejo Cancels Trip; Will Host Season Opener

Mission Viejo High School opens its 1985 football season tonight with an added bonus--an extra home game.
Originally scheduled to open in San Diego against Morse High, the Diablos instead play host to the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. in Mission Viejo Stadium. Morse couldn’t find an open stadium for the game, so for the second consecutive year, it will travel to Mission Viejo.
“That doesn’t bother me a bit,” Bill Crow, Diablo coach, said.
That’s understandable, considering it saves on a trip and keeps the Diablos in familiar surroundings.
What does worry Crow, however, is that Morse already has played a game by opening last week in Hawaii against St. Anthony of Maui. The Tigers won, 41-21, so the Diablos expect to have a difficult time containing the Morse offense.
“I hope they ate a lot of poi over there,” Crow said.
The Diablos will find out tonight. Mission Viejo won last year’s meeting, 21-6.
In other games tonight, Buena Park is at Laguna Beach, Trabuco Hills meets Southern California Christian at Glover Stadium, Corona faces Canyon at Fred Kelly Stadium and Loara meets Western at Handel Stadium.
