A parcel of land straddling the Los Angeles-Kern County border and two other locations in the San Francisco vicinity are under consideration as sites for the world’s largest scientific machine--the Superconducting Super Collider, an atom-smasher that would be about 20 miles in diameter. Scientists from Caltech, Stanford and the University of California are included in a committee to select the site, which then must compete with those in 20 other states, all hoping to become home for the machine, which would cost an estimated $3 billion and provide employment for about 3,000 people, including about 500 scientists.
