Carl Lewis won his 100-meter heat in an international meet at Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea, but there was no final race in the event.
An official who asked not to be identified said the organizers canceled the final because Lewis refused to run more than one race, a condition he had set before entering the meet.
Lewis entered the meet unannounced, arriving in Seoul only 11 hours before his event. He won his heat in 10.29 seconds. Other heat winners were Darwin Cook of the United States in 10.28 and Kimmo Saaristo of Finland in 10.50.
Mary Decker Slaney, unbeaten this summer, won her 14th straight race, taking the women’s 800 meters in 1:58.09. Her American record is 1:56.90.
