Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Fransisco) requested an emergency meeting of the University of California Board of Regents to again consider halting investments in companies that do business in South Africa. Brown, who is a regent, asked UC President David Gardner to convene the emergency session, citing the “deteriorating nature” of South Africa’s economy. The regents decided against full divestiture to protest apartheid on June 21, voting instead to establish an advisory panel that would review whether companies are following guidelines to improve the lives of black workers in South Africa.
