Three men arrested earlier this week in connection with the attempted robbery of a La Jolla jewelry store were released Friday without being charged, as police continued to investigate a series of robberies committed by masked men toting semi-automatic weapons.
Charles E. Calhoun, 21; Maurice Hillard, 23, and Gregory J. Thomas, 20, were freed after being held for three days as suspects in a robbery attempt at Winchell Jewelry Designs. Carl Winchell, owner of the business, was shot six times as he fought off the intruders. San Diego County district attorney spokesman Steve Casey said Friday that there was insufficient evidence to hold the men.
Police said the attempted robbery may be connected to 13 similar robberies since late 1983. Authorities are seeking additional suspects in the latest case.
