South Roundup : Miami Rallies to Turn Back Maryland, 29-22

From Times Wire Services

Melvin Bratton scored the first two rushing touchdowns of the season against Maryland, and Brett Perriman returned a punt 74 yards for another score to propel No. 8-ranked Miami to a 29-22 comeback victory Saturday at Baltimore.

It was the eighth straight win for the Hurricanes after a season-opening loss to Florida, and avenged Maryland’s 42-40 victory over Miami last year, when the Terrapins overcame a 31-0 halftime deficit to pull off the greatest comeback in major college history.

Maryland had a four-game winning streak broken Saturday and dropped to 6-3.

“In the last month, we’ve beaten Oklahoma, Florida State and Maryland,” Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson said. “Anyone who doesn’t vote this team as one of the top two or three in the country is either biased, uninformed or extremely uniformed.”

Perriman fielded a Darryl Wright punt and raced down the right sideline with 7:48 left in the third quarter to launch Miami’s final comeback after Rick Badanjek’s two-yard touchdown run and a safety had given Maryland a 22-13 lead.

Greg Cox, after missing a 19-yard field-goal attempt early in the fourth quarter, hit a 20-yarder with 8:13 left in the game.

Vinny Testaverde, who completed 22 of 35 attempts for 298 yards, hit on passes of 31 and 33 yards to Willie Smith to give Cox a second chance. Bratton punched across the clincher with 3:25 left.

Humes, redeeming himself for three fumbles lost in the game, rushed 25 times for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first start since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery five weeks ago.

North Carolina St. 23, Virginia 22--At Raleigh, N.C., Erik Kramer passed for two touchdowns en route to a North Carolina State passing record in an upset victory over Virginia.

Tulane 27, SW Louisiana 17--It was a long time coming, but Tulane finally snapped major college football’s longest losing streak in a game at New Orleans.

“Now, they do know they can win,” Tulane Coach Mack Brown said.
