Congress OKs Self-Rule for Pacific Territories

WASHINGTON — The Senate has given final congressional approval to a compact that would give residents of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific control over their own affairs except for defense.
The compact, passed by voice vote Friday, went to the White House. The House approved it Wednesday.
The members of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshalls have been United Nations trust territories since 1947, administered by the United States.
