Dorsey High School, which finished with an 8-3 record and reached the City 4-A semifinals after going 2-6 last season, has placed five players, the most of any school, on the first team on The Times’ All-Central City all-star football team.
The first-team selections from The Times’ 10 circulation areas--San Gabriel Valley, Centinela-South Bay, San Fernando Valley, Glendale, Southeast, Westside, South Coast, Orange County, San Diego and the Central City--will be honored today at a 9:30 a.m. brunch at the Anaheim Hilton. Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott, superintendent of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bruce Johnson, the defensive coordinator for the Falcon football team, are the featured speakers.
One Dorsey player, senior running back Tommy Jackson, who rushed for 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns, also is the Back of the Year. Yul Jenkins, a defensive standout at Verbum Dei, which went 11-0 before being upset in the quarterfinals of the Northwestern Conference playoffs, is the Lineman of the Year. Second-year Coach Randy Rodriguez, who led Lincoln to an 8-2 record after the school had not had a winning season since 1970, is Coach of the Year.

The second-team offense: wide receivers David Morales of Garfield and Lionel Phillips of Washington; linemen Dubois McMillan of Verbum Dei, Matt Pascale of Loyola, Desi Jones of Dorsey, Reginald Larry of Washington and Lewis Shackelford of Locke; quarterback Dan O’Neil of Loyola; and backs Darrin Hagan of Locke, Herman Nash of Manual Arts and Anthony Washington of Crenshaw; and kicker Carlton Kelley Jr. of Dorsey.
